Production and Institutional Accountant, Cherry Lane Theatre

Cherry Lane Theatre is seeking a Production and Institutional Accountant. This position is responsible for all financial operation bookkeeping of the theater, including both day-to-day accounting for the institution, and financial operations and reporting for the individual productions. This role ensures that all financial processes align with live production industry standards, including union compliance, grant reporting, and detailed cost tracking for theatrical productions. 

The ideal candidate is someone who has experience in Off Broadway commercial theater and is able to work both independently and alongside our Managing Director and General Manager. Additional experience in non-profit theater is a plus. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliations, and expense tracking for theater operations.
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial reports for theater operations, highlighting variances from budget and key financial metrics.
  • Develop and monitor budgets for individual productions, track and process all production-related costs, including payroll and royalties.
  • Process payroll for theater staff, performers, stage crew, and other production personnel, ensuring compliance with union contracts.
  • Maintain accurate records of union-related payments, dues, benefits, and pension contributions.
  • For productions specifically, prepare and file tax documents for employees and independent contractors (W-2s and 1099s).
  • Collaborate with theater leadership to create and manage annual operational budgets.
  • Maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and reporting requirements (e.g., IRS Form 990).
  • Provide regular reporting to investors.
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations.
  • Stay current with tax laws and industry standards affecting theaters and live productions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of professional accounting experience, with experience in commercial theatre. Additional experience in non-profit theater is a plus
  • Proficient in Quickbooks and advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience filing 990s.
  • Experience with annual operating budgets exceeding $1,000,000
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and union payroll compliance.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Humble, diligent, and resourceful

Our target salary range for this role is between $75,000 to $100,000. We do not use formal job titles internally and similarly named positions may have different compensation levels. Actual starting salary within the range will depend on various considerations, including: work experience, skills, specializations, and training. This role is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, including both cash and equity components, competitive healthcare, as well as other employee benefits.
