If anyone knows Miami, it’s Barry Jenkins.

He brought the world to his hometown of Liberty City with Moonlight and told a story that was just as much about the place itself as it was about Chiron’s coming of age in the south. Its people, its scenery, its food—this is Barry’s Miami. We asked him to share the spots he hits up whenever he’s back in town.

Panther Coffee  2390 NW 2nd Ave

This is legit SF-quality coffee. Early in the morning it's super chill there—I used to go at 7am to have fresh pastelitos. Best new wave cafe in Miami, bar none.

Panther Coffee Miami Bar

Blue Collar 6730 Biscayne Blvd

Super chill and unassuming place for lunch/brunch. Lovely staff. I have a massive crush on the proprietor of this place, but trust: I frequent it for the eats.

Mandolin Aegean Bistro 4312 NE 2nd Ave

Best meal at a decent price. This is one of the few places in Miami that didn't get ruined when it got popular.

So damn good.

The Corner 1035 N Miami Ave

For a drink at sunset, it can't be beat. Terrific cocktails and legit sidewalk seating—it literally sits on the corner of Miami Ave and 11th Street. Going there at night isn't bad, but being at this place at 4:30 in the afternoon for a cocktail as the sun starts to descend is heaven. Great hot dogs too. Yes. Hot dogs.

Corner 0001 Layer6

Lagniappe 3425 NE 2nd Ave

New Orleans style wine bar with a massive outdoor patio. Low-key but charming place, they have live music in the main room every night but the patio is where it's at. This was probably my favorite place to hang out on off moments from making Moonlight.

Perez Art Museum Miami 126

Pérez Art Museum 1103 Biscane Blvd
The veranda here is as impressive as anything on the museum walls. A real architectural marvel. The Perez costs money though. For a free run through a wonderful private collection, hit up the De La Cruz.

Enriquetas Sandwich Shop 009

Enriqueta's Sandwich Shop 186 NE 29th St
For Cuban coffee/food,  don't waste your time going to one of the tourist traps. Hit up Enriqueta's for fantastic Cuban coffee and authentic sandwiches.

"You haven't tasted Cuban until you've tasted Enriqueta's Sandwich."

Supply And Advise 223 SE 1st St
If your man is with you and he wants to shop a bit (or even get a haircut). It's kind of like a Unionmade in Miami. And it's very near Brickell.

Buena Vista Deli 4590 NE 2nd Ave
Authentic French bakery right smack in Miami. Super delicious and authentic pastries and a damn good Tuna Nicoise Salad.
